  Pokhara

Machapuchare from Sarangkot, Nepal, 1995
Pokhara is a small town, bautifully located at the bottom of a valley on the shore of Phewa Lake. When the weather is clear, its blue waters reflect the snowy white ranges of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri, both higher than magical 8000 m. The most famous of the mountains that can be admired from here is the pyramid-like Machapuchare, a sacred Nepalese peak, still unscaled. Pokhara is a starting point for one of the most popular treks in the Himalayas.

The mountains are only 10 miles from here, but the charm of the valley comes also from colourful villages and green hills covered with tropical vegetation or converted into rice paddies.

Traffic along the trails is quite heavy as all the goods must be transported on the backs of colourful porters.
